SEA CADETS DO WELL IN AREA 5 A SIDE FOOTBALL
Two teams from Orkney Sea Cadets recently travelled to East Lothian to take part in the Northern Area Sea Cadet five a side football championships playing against teams from all over Scotland and north east England. The girls team played well but were knocked out in the group stages of their competition however they gained a creditable fifth place overall. The boys team did better, defeating Hartlepool, Queensferry, Arbroath, Helensburgh and Stonehaven on their way to the final which they narrowly lost to Sunderland. After the contest Northern Area Officer Commander Ian Bartholomew Royal Navy paid tribute to the Orkney Cadets for making the effort to travel such a long way to take part in the competition. Both teams are determined to get more practice in for next year and hope to win the Area contest and go on to the National competition.

UNIT WINS EFFICIENCY AWARD FOR 2004
Orkney Sea cadet unit was recently presented with an Efficiency Pennant for 2004 recognising the achievemnts of the Cadets, Staff and Committee over the past year. The award was presented by Mr George Marwick, Lord Lieutenant of Orkney, and was received on behalf of Orkney Unit by Petty Officer Cadet Charlene Wylie and Leading Junior Paul Tait.

SCOTT IS TOP PO CADET IN NORTHERN AREA
Petty Officer Cadet Scott Paterson recently received the trophy for Cadet Petty Officer of the Year 2004 as the best in Northern Area. Northern Area covers all Sea Cadets in Scotland, Northern Ireland and North East England.

DISTRICT TRAINING WEEKEND VOTED A HUGE SUCCESS
Orkney Unit hosted a training weekend for Highland District Sea Cadets and Staff on the 25th to 27th March. Subjects taught were Cadet 3rd Class Seamanship, Adult Basic Seamanship and Cadet 3rd Class Marine Engineering. Seven Adult Staff and 17 Cadets travelled to Orkney from Thurso, Inverness and Moray Units to take part. Orkney Cadets Amy Breck, Jennifer Park and Danielle O'Hagan all passed their Seamanship exams whilst Alan Brown, Andrew Cuddihy, Jacob Spence, Eddie Brown, Rachel Wylie and Benny Norquoy all gained Marine Engineering 3rd Class Certificates.

HIGHLAND DISTRICT COMBINED REGATTA
Orkney unit hosted the Highland District Combined Regatta on the 29th April to 2nd May 2005.
Cadets and Staff form Orkney, Thurso, Inverness and Moray Units took part with many Cadets gaining boating qualifications.

VERY SUCCESSFUL FLAG DAY
Orkney Cadets did extremely well during their recent Flag Day held in Kirkwall on Saturday 14th May 2005. The Cadets managed to raise £1100!!

UNIT ANNUAL CAMP ONCE MORE A GREAT SUCCESS
Orkney Unit's Annual Camp to Norwegian Lodge near Aviemore was voted a great success by the 25 Cadets who attended. Activities included canoeing, orienteering, swimming and mountain biking. 5 Cadets successfully gained their Class 3 Radio Operator Badges and 5 gained their Class 3 Cook/Steward Badges during the week

HRH DUKE OF YORK VISITS ORKNEY SEA CADET UNIT
His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, visited TS Thorfinn on Wednesday 13th July 2005. After being received by a Guard of Honour, HRH toured the HQ Building and witnessed a ropework display by the Cadets and a campcraft display by the Juniors.

CADETS TAKE PART IN ROYAL OAK CEREMONY
Petty Officers Clarke Ross and Jimmy Leask with two Cadets took part in the HMS Royal Oak wreath laying ceremony on Friday 14th October in Scapa Flow. HMS Royal Oak was torpedoed whilst lying at anchor in Scapa Flow on 14th October 1939 by U47 with the loss of 833 Sailors.
